FELIX FRANKFURTER
Handwritten love letter penning "I only speak still under the sway of the majestic awe of the Grand Canyon"
Autograph Letter Signed: "F.F.", 2p (separate sheets), 5¼x8. Cambridge, Mass., [1915] October 27. On "Law School of Harvard University" stationery. To CR [Miss Charlotte Rudyard]. In full: "I wonder if it's a [illegible] of youth to be more conscious that one can't always trust that letters which answer themselves will convey the thoughts of the - answers? There is a directness to your note there - by curious trick - made me hope, and therefore believe, that the chill of the north is, at times, and in increasing measure relenting at any rate - that you abate the full pleasure of its malignancy by refusing less combat to what 'always will come'. Or maybe I only speak still under the sway of the majestic awe of the Grand Canyon - which renders irrelevance to much that seems the ego's daily need. Perhaps I should not quarrel at the shimmering illusions my 'understanding' seems to give. I don't know. The 'understanding' I suspect is merely imagination gradually acquired through a growing sense of limitations. The thing that matters [illegible] - : good luck to you!" With original "Law School of Harvard University" embossed stamped envelope, 6¼x3½, postmarked Cambridge, Mass., October 28, 1915. Addressed by Frankfurter to: "Miss Charlotte Rudyard, 421 West 21 St, New York City". Soiled and lightly creased. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, FELIX FRANKFURTER (1882-1965) served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1939-1962. Born in Vienna, Frankfurter was an assistant to Henry L. Stimson (1906-1909, 1911-1913). When Stimson served as Taft's Secretary of War from 1909-1911, Frankfurter was legal counsel in the War Department. From 1914-1939, Frankfurter was a professor at Harvard Law School. This letter was written to Miss Rudyard in 1915 while 33-year-old Frankfurter was still a bachelor. He married Marion Denman in 1919. Usual folds. Lightly creased. Small nick at blank left margin of second page. Fine condition. Two items.
