FELIX FRANKFURTER. Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Gus Richards, an exemplary citizen./from his devoted friend/Felix Frankfurter/14 December 1944" as Associate Justice. B/w, 7¾x10¾ overall, image 6¾x9¼ (one surface). A renowned legal scholar, Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965) influenced Supreme Court decisions for more than twenty years as an Associate Justice from 1939-1962. Having served as an advisor to the NAACP and co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union, Frankfurter played a pivotal role in deciding the famous school desegregation case, Brown vs. the Board of Education (1954), ensuring its historic importance by securing a unanimous decision. However, his strides as a judicial reformer were always balanced against his belief that society's ills must be corrected through the legislative branch. Therefore, Frankfurter dissented when the Court ruled in favor of legislative reapportionment (Baker vs. Carr, 1962), which he felt was a strictly political problem. The staunch advocate of judicial self-restraint stabilized the liberal Earl Warren Court and promoted "procedural fairness" in criminal cases. A legal aide to Woodrow Wilson and an informal advisor to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Frankfurter was presented the Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Slightly soiled at lower left margin. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 19¼x29¼.
