This collection includes two letters from the Supreme Court Justice, including one signed by six other notable religious and community leaders.
Collection comprises: 1) Typed Letter Signed: "Philip S. Bernstein", "Ralph J. Bunche", "William J. Donovan", "James H. Duff", "Felix Frankfurter", "Daniel A. Poling", and "Channing H. Tobias". 7x10 visible. Two pages. Dated April 8, 1953. Sent to Dr. W. W. Alexander in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This letter is regarding a weekend-long event in Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania, from June 19-21, 1953. The founder of the town, a Jewish man named Aaron Levy, donated a lot of land and money to build a Lutheran Church. The 150th anniversary of the Church was celebrated in 1949, and the signers attended a celebratory event that year. They planned to meet in Aaronsburg a second time to discuss religious tolerance, peace, and equality. Letter in Part: "All of us who sign this letter were at Aaronsburg that Sunday, nearly four years ago. We were tremendously impressed by what we saw and heard. We went away with the hope that the powerful energy for good, unleashed here in this rural Pennsylvania community, could somehow be developed into a force for world enlightenment. If that day should ever come we wanted to help and hoped we would be invited to return to Aaronsburg. We have been". Lightly toned. In Full: "My dear Lewis:/ Sad as is the news of the burning of the Aaronsburg I'm grateful to you for sending me the information. Since the walls have been spared, perhaps 'they' will rebuild it on its old site". Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition. Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965) was a Supreme Court Justice from 1939 to 1962. He replaced Benjamin Cardozo on the bench upon the latter's death. In addition to his lengthy tenure on the highest court in the land, Frankfurter also co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union. Other signers include Philip S. Bernstein (1901-1985), William Donovan (1883-1959), Ralph Bunche (1904-1971), James H. Duff (1883-1969) Daniel A. Poling (1884-1968), and Channing Tobias (1882-1961).
