Calling Card signed: "Yours truly/George Shiras Jr./Feb 8th 1894", 3x1½. Engraved: "Mr. Justice Shiras" on verso. A Pittsburgh lawyer appointed to the US Supreme Court by Benjamin Harrison in 1892, George Shiras, Jr. (1832-1924) served as Associate Justice until he retired in 1903. He is best remembered for two decisions: Pollock v Farmers Loan and Trust (1896), which held the federal income tax unconstitutional; and Plessy v Ferguson (1896), which declared "separate but equal" segregation constitutional. Fine condition.
