Maryland. In full: "This will acknowledge receipt of your cordial
letter of April 5, addressed to Mrs. Burton and me at the Dodge Hotel in
Washington, inviting us to become members of the Honorary Committee in
conjunction with the Ambassador's Ball to be given in Washington on May 26 in
honor of His Excellency The Ambassador of Israel and Mrs. Eban. I appreciate
your thinking of us in this connection but feel that, in accordance with the
policy I have adopted in these matters for several years, I must decline the

(1888-1964) was Mayor of Cleveland (1931-1932, 1935-1940) and
Republican Senator from Ohio (1941-1945).Appointed by President
Harry Truman, Burton served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from
1945 to 1958. A liberal on civil rights issues, Burton joined several
decisions against racial segregation. He was more conservative on civil
liberties questions, voting to uphold loyalty oaths and to deny First
Amendment claims by Communist Party members. Two
