Harold H. Burton sends a typed letter to a collector with his autograph as Mayor of Cleveland.
Typed Letter Signed: "Harold H. Burton" as Mayor of Cleveland, 1p, 7¼x10½. Cleveland, Ohio, 1938 July 29. To Mr. Gordon B. Cronheim, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "Replying to your letter of July 9, I am glad to know that you are taking an interest in autograph collecting. I assume from your letter to me that you are now making a drive to cover the Mayors of the principal cities of the United States. I am glad to join your collection on behalf of this industrial and cosmopolitan city in the middle west. With best wishes, Yours sincerely," Harold H. Burton (1888-1964) was Mayor of Cleveland (1931-1932, 1935-1940) and Republican Senator from Ohio (1941-1945). Appointed by President Harry Truman, Burton served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1945 to 1958. A liberal on civil rights issues, Burton joined several decisions against racial segregation. He was more conservative on civil liberties questions, voting to uphold loyalty oaths and to deny First Amendment claims by Communist Party members. Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition.
