Four Supreme Court Justices sign a first day cover honoring Oliver Wendell Holmes as part of the Prominent Americans series.
First Day Cover signed: "John Paul Stevens", "Harry A. Blackmun", "Lewis F. Powell Jr" and "Byron R. White" as Associate Justices, 6½x3¾. FDC in the Prominent Americans series honoring Oliver Wendell Holmes, block of four 15-cent Holmes stamps affixed, postmarked Washington, DC, March 8, 1968, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Typed names of Stevens and Blackmun above their signatures; names of Powell and White typed beneath their signatures. These Associate Justices served under Chief Justice Warren E. Burger until 1986 and then under Burger's successor, William H. Rehnquist. From 1975, when Stevens was appointed, to 1981, when Potter Stewart was succeeded by Sandra Day O'Connor, they were members of the last all-male Supreme Court. HARRY BLACKMUN (1908-1999), a Republican appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1970, served until retiring in 1994. JOHN PAUL STEVENS (1920-2019), a Republican appointed by President Gerald Ford in 1975, continues to serve on the Rehnquist Court. LEWIS F. POWELL, JR. (1907-1998), a Democrat appointed by President Nixon in 1971, served until 1987. BYRON R. WHITE (1917-2002), a Democrat appointed by President Kennedy, served from 1962-1993. Slightly rippled. Ink lightly smudged at the "L" of Lewis and the "W" of White. Fine condition.
