Signature: "Henry B. Brown/Asso. Just. Sup. Ct. U.S.", 4¼x2¾. Henry Billings Brown (1836-1913) was an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court from January 5, 1891 to May 28, 1906. A well-regarded federal judge in Michigan, Brown was appointed to the Court by President Benjamin Harrison at the urging of Howell Edmonds Jackson, who was himself appointed to the Court three years later. Brown authored in excess of 450 majority opinions during his tenure, giving preference to private property and free competition. He is probably best remembered for the opinion he authored for the majority: Plessy v. Ferguson, in which he reflected the views of the day that whites were biologically separate from Blacks and superior to them. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Lightly toned.
