First day cover signed "Hugo L. Black" in blue ink. 6½x3¼. First day
cover honoring President John F. Kennedy with cachet of Kennedy and facsimile
signature at left edge. Postmarked Boston, Massachusetts, May 29, 1964.
Addressed to L. Kieve, Cedarhurst, New York. One 5¢ b/w Kennedy and Eternal
Flame stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Black (1886-1971) served as
Democratic Senator from Alabama (1927-1937) before being appointed to the
Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, serving from 1937 to 1971.
On the Court his judicial opinions supported President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt's New Deal economic and social legislation. Later he became noted for
his defense of the Bill of Rights as an absolute guarantee of personal rights.
Lightly soiled and worn at corners. Paper loss on verso (no show-through).
