Signature on a Supreme Court card, affixed on a page with a newspaper photo of Black
Supreme Court Card signed: "Hugo L. Black", 4¼x3¼ Affixed to a 8½x11 page with brief typed biography and a reproduced Yousuf Karsh photo of Black. Black (1886-1971 served as Democratic Senator from Alabama (1927-1937) before being appointed to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, serving from 1937 to 1971. On the Court his judicial opinions supported President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal economic and social legislation. Later he became noted for his defense of the Bill of Rights as an absolute guarantee of personal rights. These philosophies were a far cry from his early days as a member of the Ku Klux Klan. From the private collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
