Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black signed this typed letter on Supreme Court
letterhead in 1944 to say that he couldn't send an photograph of himself but
would send his autograph.

Appointed Associate Justice by FDR in 1937, Black served until he retired a
week before his death in 1971. Black (1886-1971) served as
Democratic Senator from Alabama (1927-1937) before being appointed to the
Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, serving from 1937 to 1971.
On the Court his judicial opinions supported President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt's New Deal economic and social legislation. Later he became noted for
his defense of the Bill of Rights as an absolute guarantee of personal rights.
