James Clark McReynolds signed this closing from an autograph letter
in 1935 as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court
Autograph fragment signed: "With best wishes/Faithfully yours/J.C.
McReynolds/Justice U.S. Supreme Court." 1 page, 4¾x2¾. Washington, D. C.,
Feb. 7 1935. McReynolds (1862-1946) was Attorney General under
President Woodrow Wilson (1913-1914), who appointed him Associate Justice
of the Supreme Court (1914-1941). McReynolds was a staunch opponent of
President Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal," often joining with Justices
Sutherland, Van DeVanter and Butler to oppose measures like the Tennessee
Valley Authority, the National Industrial Recovery Act and Social Security.
Lightly toned. Yellow stain at left edge, which touches handwriting but not
signature. Handwriting, but not signature, has bled and is smeared in places,
but is legible. Irregular top, left and bottom edges. Otherwise, fine
condition.
