JAMES C. McREYNOLDS
James C. McReynolds sends an autograph letter of thanks for the
birthday greeting.
Autograph Letter Signed: "J.C. McReynolds" as Associate
Justice, 1p, 6x8. Supreme Court, Washington, D.C., 1935 February 26.
To Mrs. Eli Ketaif. In full: "Thank you very much for the birthday
greeting which you and yr husband were good enough to send. Growing old is a
terrible cross. But it does help to be told of your good wishes. Faithfully
yours," James C. McReynolds (1862-1946) was Attorney General under Woodrow
Wilson (1913-1914), who then appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme
Court (1914-1941). McReynolds was a staunch opponent of President Franklin
Roosevelt's "New Deal," often joining with Justices Sutherland, Van DeVanter
and Butler to oppose measures like the Tennessee Valley Authority, the National
Industrial Recovery Act and Social Security. Lightly creased. Fine
condition.
