Autograph letter signed "J. C. McReynolds". With pencil notations on back of letter in unknown hand. 1 page, 6x7¼, 1 sheet folded. Dated "March 13". In full: "There is no doubt about it - Mr. Chas. Henry Butler is a very nice person! Thank you very, verymuch for the lovely [illegible] apples. They are fine. Judge Robb shall have one or two or three, and he will join in the vote of admiration. With best wishes. Faithfully yours,". CHARLES HENRY BUTLER (1859-1940, born in New York City) was 10th reporter of decisions of the United States Supreme Court from 1902 to 1916. JAMES CLARKMcREYNOLDS (1862-1946, born in Elkton, Kentucky) was Attorney General under President Woodrow Wilson (1913-1914), who appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1914-1941). McReynolds was a staunch opponent of President Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal," often joining with Justices Sutherland, Van DeVanter and Butler to oppose measures like the Tennessee Valley Authority, the National Industrial Recovery Act and Social Security. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Lightly discolored on back of letter. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
