ASSOCIATE JUSTICE JAMES C. MCREYNOLDS - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/20/1913 - HFSID 291659
Price: $320.00
JAMES C. McREYNOLDS
As Attorney General, the future Supreme Court Justice expresses
disinterest in buying a farm near his cousin.
Typed Letter signed: "J. C. McReynolds" as Attorney
General, 1 page, 6x8¼. Washington, D.C., 1913 October 20. On official
letterhead to George P. Street ["My Dear Cousin George"], Elkton,
Kentucky. In full: "Thank you very much for your letter of the 17th,
in reference to the farm on the Clarksville road. Somehow, that locality don't
[sic] appeal much to me. If I should buy a farm you, of course, know it
would be largely a matter of sentiment. I am glad to know that all goes well
with you. Sincerely yours". McReynolds (1862-1946) was
Attorney General under President Woodrow Wilson (1913-1914), who appointed
him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1914-1941). McReynolds was
a staunch opponent of President Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal," often
joining with Justices Sutherland, Van DeVanter and Butler to oppose measures
like the Tennessee Valley Authority, the National Industrial Recovery Act and
Social Security. McReynolds was a blatant anti-Semite, refusing even to
converse with Jewish Justices. Chief Justice Taft called him "fuller of
prejudice than any man I have ever known." Lightly toned and creased. Mailing
fold through center. Otherwise, fine condition.
