JAMES F. BYRNES. Signature: "James F Byrnes" as Truman's Secretary of State on verso of 5x3¼ postal card. 1-cent imprinted postal card, postmarked Washington, D.C., December 31, 1946. Handwritten address (unknown hand) to a collector in Los Angeles on front. As Secretary of State (1945-1947) under President Harry S Truman, Byrnes attended meetings regarding the establishment of the United Nations in both London and Lake Success, New York. Democrat James Francis Byrnes (1882-1972) had previously been a U.S. Congressman (1911-1925) and U.S. Senator (1931-1941) from South Carolina before serving as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1941-1942). He was Governor of South Carolina from 1951-1955. Lightly soiled. Postal markings at blank area above signature. Overall, fine condition.
