Byrnes signed this typed letter on United States Senate letterhead, in response to a Milwaukee autograph hunter, in 1941, the last year that he was U.S. Senator from South Carolina. With original mailing envelope.
Typed letter signed"James F Byrnes". 1 page, 7¾x10¾, on United States Senate letterhead. Feb. 10, 1941. Addressed to Mr. Fred E. Kunz, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In full: "Dear Mr. Kunz: I am glad to hand you herewith autographed card [not included], which you requested in your letter of the 8th. Sincerely yours, JAMES F. BYRNES. B:sc." Accompanied by: original mailing envelope from the United States Senate with "James F Byrnes/U.S.S." stamp in blue ink, postmarked Washington, DC, Feb. 10, 1941. Byrnes (1882-1972) was Secretary of State from 1945 to 1947. A lawyer and newspaper editor, Byrnes had been a U.S. Representative (1911-1925) and U.S. Senator (1931-1941) from South Carolina and an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court (1941-1942) before joining Truman's Cabinet. He was later Governor of South Carolina (1951-1955). Letter is lightly toned and creased. Upper left corner has small fold. Folded twice and unfolded. Envelope is lightly toned. Top has been torn open. Otherwise in fine condition.
