JAMES F. BYRNES
Rare typed letter, signed by Byrnes, on Supreme Court letterhead in 1942. Byrnes was a Supreme Court justice for only 15 months, one of the shortest terms in history; because of this, Supreme Court letters signed by him are rare.
Typed letter signed "James F. Byrnes" as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, 1 page, 8x10¼. Washington, D.C., May 4, 1942. To Charles E. Ellicock, American Society for Metals, Cleveland, Ohio. In full: "Dear Sir: I have your letter of the 28th. I have no record of having received your previous communication. Therefore, if you will advise me what information you desire, I will endeavor to assist you. Sincerely yours, JAMES F. BYRNES." Byrnes (1882-1972), a former South Carolina Congressman, resigned as U.S. Senator when President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him to the Supreme Court on July 8, 1941. On October 3, 1942, Byrnes resigned from the Supreme Court to head the wartime Office of Economic Stabilization. Byrnes served on the Supreme Court for 15 months, the shortest in U.S. history. In 1943, he became director of the Office of War Mobilization and served as President Truman's Secretary of State from 1945 to 1947. One of America's most versatile statesmen, Byrnes was Governor of South Carolina from 1951 to 1955. Lightly toned and creased. Mounting remnant across top verso, which shows through on front. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
