Typed letter signed "James F. Byrnes" as Secretary of State. 1 page, 6¾x8¾, on letterhead of the Secretary of State with embossed Great Seal in upper left corner. October 23, 1945. To Newark, New Jersey high school athletic director Fred Giffoniellt, regretting "at this time I do not have a photograph to send you". Accompanied by: original typed State Department envelope (no stamp affixed). In addition to serving as Secretary of State from July 1945 to January 1947, Byrnes was on the Supreme Court for 15 months (1941-1942), the shortest term in history, and served in the House and Senate and as Governor of South Carolina. Both items encapsulated in plastic. Lightly toned and creased. Letter has been folded in half and unfolded. Envelope has adhesive remnants on verso and tape remnants on front. Flap has been torn off. Otherwise in fine condition.
