JOHN M. HARLAN, JR.
He signs a letter as Associate Justice, saying he will be unable to accept an invitation to the America-Israel Society Dinner
Typed letter signed: "John M. Harlan" as Associate Justice, 1p, 5¾x7½. Supreme Court, Washington, D.C., 1956 March 28. To Governor Theodore R. McKeldin of Maryland, telling him that "unfortunately my wife and I have made another engagement...so we shall not be able to accept your kind invitation to the America-Israel Society dinner...." John M. Harlan, Jr. (1899-1971), appointed Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, was sworn in on March 28, 1955, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and namesake, John Marshall Harlan (1833-1911), who served as an Associate Justice from 1877-1911. The younger Harlan had previously served as a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit, from 1954-1955. He retired from the Supreme Court on September 23, 1971, just three months before his death on December 29, 1971. Light paper clip impression at upper left blank margin. Fine condition.
