JOHN M. HARLAN
Signature of the U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice, the grandfather of another Associate Justice of the same name.
Signature: "Yrs truly/John M. Harlan/Associate Justice/Sup. Ct. U.S", 6x3¾ album leat. John Marshall Harlan (1833-1911), appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Hayes in 1877, served until his death. He is remembered for his 1896 dissenting opinion in Plessy v. Ferguson, saying that Jim Crow laws, which established the principle of "separate but equal" racial segregation, in fact, deprived Black citizens of equal protection of the law. His grandson, also Associate Justice John Marshall Harlan, was a member of the Warren Court that, in 1954, unanimously reversed the 1896 decision declaring racial segregation in schools unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education. Ink slightly smudged at "John" and "M" of signature and at the "As" of Associate and the "u" of Sup. Slightly creased. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Overall, fine condition.
