JOHN McLEAN. ALS: "J. McLean" as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, 1p, 4x6. (Washington), 1846 March 10. Likely hand delivered as McLean requests, "Will Mr Young oblige me so much as to inform me by the bearer whether Mr Walker will do any thing for Mr Brown. I shall leave at 6 in the morning and I wish to inform Mr Brown before I leave what prospect of relief he may cherish." John McLean (1785-1861), formerly a Member of Congress and an Ohio court judge, had been appointed Commissioner by President Monroe on September 11, 1822, two months before signing this land grant. In 1823, Monroe appointed him Postmaster General. McLean held that position through 1829 when President Jackson appointed him Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court where he served until his death in 1861.He wrote a vigorous dissent from the Dred Scott decision of 1857. McLean was second to John C. Frémont in the voting for the presidential nomination at the first Republican National Convention in 1856 and also received votes at the 1860 convention at which Lincoln was nominated. Remnant of wax seal on integral leaf, which is torn at edges and soiled. The letter is soiled and worn.
