of Americana series, with 13-cent stamp featuring Independence Hall and the
13-star flag, postmarked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 15, 1975,
FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. John Paul Stevens (b. 1920) was nominated by President Ford
and was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court on
December 19, 1975 (the year this stamp was issued). He established a moderately
liberal voting record that made him seem even more liberal against more recent
conservative appointees and has been a strong defender of civil rights, gay
rights and First Amendment rights. Signature lightly beaded but legible. Typed
note on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
