To Harold Phelps Stokes: "Received your note yesterday afternoon in regard to the invitation to dinner to be given to the Hon. Lloyd George this evening. I did not receive the invitation, and have not yet received it. However, a lady called me to the telephone yesterday in regard to it and I requested her to thank the Overseas Writers for the invitation and to say that unfortunately, I was unable to accept. I now repeat the thanks for the compliment and the regret that I am unable to avail myself of it, and its pleasure. Sincerely," McKENNA, appointed by President McKinley, served on the Supreme Court from 1898-1925. His correspondent, HAROLD PHELPS STOKES, was a reporter for the "New York Post" from 1911-1923, the year of this letter. Stokes, who became secretary to Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover in 1924, was interested in U.S. foreign policy, particularly the Paris Peace Conference. DAVID LLOYD GEORGE, the British Prime Minister from 1916-1922, was Great Britain's chief representative at the Conference. Lightly creased. Staple holes at upper left blank corner. Fine condition.
