JOSEPH P. BRADLEY
Joseph P. Bradley wrote this letter in 1869, one year before he was
appointed to the Supreme Court, to say that he was sailing for Europe and where
his family was in the meantime.
ALS: "J.P. Bradley", 1p, 6x8. Newark, 1869 August 21.
To Lewis. In full: "I sail for Europe today in the City of Boston
Steamer - to be gone until middle of October. Mary wife and daughter with
Charley & Mr Buttle have gone to Brattleboro - via Troy & Bennington.
With Carriage. Carry Hornblower is in Phila. Love to Mary". Bradley
(1813-1892), appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to the Supreme Court in
1870, served on the 1877 Electoral Commission created to decide the outcome
of the disputed 1876 presidential election; his vote made Rutherford B.
Hayes the President.He served as an Associate Justice on the Supreme
Court until his death. Folds, vertical fold touches "J". Lightly creased.
