Joseph Bradley wrote this letter from Newark, New Jersey in 1870, the year he was appointed to the Supreme Court, to printer Joel Munsell about changes to a 24-page proof.
ALS: "Joseph P. Bradley" as Associate Justice, 1p, 5½x8. Newark, N.J., 1870 Sept. 19. Seven months after Grant appointed him to the Supreme Court, Bradley writes to Joel Munsell, Esq. In part: "I return the proof of 24 pages by this mail, in a separate envelope. Dr Campbell suggested some alterations, which you will see, on the title page. The Appendix (what I have designated such) we will call a 'note'; and will designate as an Appendix, the proceedings of the Centennial Celebration, which I presume will be furnished by Dr,. Campbell or Mr. Pruyn...." JOSEPH P. BRADLEY (1813-1892) was an avid collector of books and his library comprised some ten thousand volumes. He was sappointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to the Supreme Court in 1870 and served on the 1877 Electoral Commission created to decide the outcome of the disputed 1876 presidential election; his vote made Rutherford B. Hayes the President. He served as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court until his death. JOEL MUNSELL (1808-1880) was a prominent and respected printer and editor. JOHN PRUYN (1811-1872) was an attorney, a New York State Senator and a trustee of several New York universities. Lightly soiled. Fine condition.
