Joseph P. Bradley wrote this letter in 1864 to say that he would sell a house and piece of property to New Jersey Attorney General Frederick T. Frelinghuysen. President Chester A. Arthur appointed Frelinghuysen Secretary of State in 1881.
ALS: "Jos. P. Bradley", 1p, 5x8. New York, 1864 December 17. To Hon. L.B. Woodruff, informing him that "I have just concluded a bargain with Fred. T. Frelinghuysen Esq to sell him the house & lot for $20,000 payable 1 Ap[ri]l & deed then deliverable & possession then given...." At the time, FREDERICK T. FRELINGHUYSEN (1817-1885), who later served as President Chester A. Arthur's Secretary of State (1881-1885), was Attorney General of New Jersey. JOSEPH P. BRADLEY (1813-1892), appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to the Supreme Court in 1870, served on the 1877 Electoral Commission created to decide the outcome of the disputed 1876 presidential election; his vote made Rutherford B. Hayes the President. He served as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court until his death. Folds, vertical fold touches the "J". Lightly tanned at lower portion, letters of last name a bit smudged, else fine.
