Woodbury signed this Treasury Department document in 1839, when he was
Secretary of the Treasury, awarding a claim to George Meyer after an 1835 fire
in New York City
Document signed "Levi Woodbury" with other signatures in unknown
hands. 2 pages (1 sheet folded, front and verso), 7¾x9¾. Nov. 30, 1839.
This document directs a commission formed by a July 7, 1838 congressional
act to pay George Meyer $342.45. Meyer received this money to compensate him for
goods lost in a fire in New York City, which burned Dec. 16 and 17, 1835.
Woodbury (1789-1851) was President Jackson's Secretary of the Navy
(1831-1834) and Secretary of the Treasury (1834-1837), continuing in the
Treasury when Martin Van Buren became President (1837-1841).In 1845,
Woodbury was appointed Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by
President Polk, serving until his death in 1851. Woodbury's other elected
offices also included Governor of New Hampshire (1823-1824) and U.S.
Senator from the state (1825-1831, 1841-1845). He sought the Democratic
Presidential nomination in 1848. Lightly toned. Lightly soiled on verso. Crease
in upper right corner. Document has been folded in three and unfolded. Tears
along folds. Tear in right and top edge. Rounded corners. Otherwise in fine
condition.
