LEVI WOODBURY. Partly Printed DS: "Levi Woodbury" as Van
Buren's Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Treasury Department, 1840
May 21. In part: "In compliance with the directions contained in the 4th
section of the act of Congress of the 7th of July, 1838, entitled 'An act to
remit the duties upon certain goods destroyed by fire at the late conflagration
in the city of New York,' I have duly examined the testimony, and have
compared the same with the statement and adjudication of the Commissioners in
the claim of Moses Taylor and approve of their determination in regard to said
claim, and hereby sanction the award of $236.19 found to be due to the aforesaid
claimant...." The 1835 fire ravaged most of New York City north of City
Hall, destroying 700 buildings. Levi Woodbury served as Jackson and Van
Buren's Secretary of the Treasury from 1834-1841. Appointed Associate Justice by
James K. Polk in 1845, Woodbury served until his death in 1851. Horizontal
folds, not at signature, are nicked at edges. Lightly creased. Overall, fine
condition.
