Partly printed DS: "Levi Woodbury" as Van Buren's Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, 73/4x93/4. Treasury Department, 1840 May 21. "To Messrs Jesse Hoyt, W.S. Coe & B.F. Butler, Commissioners &c N. York." In full: "In compliance with the directions contained in the 4th section of the act of Congress of the 7th of July, 1838, entitled 'An act to remit the duties upon certain goods destroyed by fire at the late conflagration in the city of New York,' I have duly examined the testimony, and have compared the same with the statement and adjudication of the Commissioners in the claim of Moses Taylor and approve of their determination in regard to said claim, and hereby sanction the award of $43.44 found to be due to the aforesaid claimant. On the execution of the bond mentioned in the section before stated, the prescribed certificate can be issued by the Commissioners in this case." Docketed on verso: "248 [ink]/248 [pencil]/Claim of Moses Taylor/Approval of Claim/May 21st 1840". Butler, who had served as Attorney General under Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren (1833-1838)was appointed U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York in 1838. He served in the post until 1841, and was one of the three commissioners assigned to handle claims resulting from the 1835 fire that ravaged most of New York City north of City Hall, destroying 700 buildings. It would not be until 1883 that the first fireproof building was erected in the city (at 122 W. 78th Street). Docket leaf slightly soiled. Fine condition.
