Lewis F. Powell, Jr. sends a letter to Timothy P. Greeley stating that he

Lewis F. Powell, Jr.
Typed Letter Signed: "Lewis Powell" as Associate Justice, 1p,
8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1979 May 2. To Timothy P. Greeley, Esq., Law School,
Wayne Law Review, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. In full:
"Thank you for your letter applying for a clerkship. I will consider your
application in September when I undertake the difficult task of selecting clerks
from a large number of highly qualified young lawyers and will let you know if
an interview seems desirable. I do congratulate you on a fine record and send
best wishes." Democrat Lewis F. Powell, Jr. (1907-1998) was appointed
Associate Justice by President Nixon. Commissioned on December 9, 1971,
he was sworn in on January 7, 1972 and served for 15 years, five months and 19
days before retiring on June 26, 1987. Serving under both Chief Justices Warren
Burger and William H. Rehnquist (from 1986), Powell, who had been a moderate
before joining the Court, often found himself as the swing vote in a number of
important cases. His votes decided the Court's first confrontations with
abortion and affirmative action issues. Before joining the Court, the
highlight of Powell's legal career was becoming President of the American Bar
Association in 1964. TIMOTHY P. GREELEY is now U.S. Magistrate Judge
for the Western District of Michigan. Lightly creased. Fine
condition.
