LOUIS D. BRANDEIS
Louis D. Brandeis signs and addresses and signs an envelope.
Autograph Envelope signed: "Brandeis/Chatham, Mass." on flap on verso, 6¼x3½. 3-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Chatham, Massachusetts, July 11, 1939. Addressed by Brandeis to: "Miss Josephine Goldmark/c/o Mr. James Goldmark/Rosemary Hall, Greenwich/Conn." Signed five months after Brandeis retired from the U.S. Supreme Court. Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941), who had been nicknamed the "people's lawyer", supported Woodrow Wilson's nomination for the Presidency in 1912. In 1916, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Wilson, becoming the first Jewish Associate Justice. He worked behind the scenes to influence President Wilson to support the Zionist cause, and later brought Zionist matters to the attention of FDR. Brandeis, who served for 23 years on the Court until his retirement in 1939, was a progressive who was known for his anti-monopolist and anti-big business views. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled and stained, paper clip stain at upper margin on front. Ink smudged at the "a" in Chatham on verso, postmark touches 2 words of writing. Overall, fine condition.
