LOUIS D. BRANDEIS
Louis D. Brandeis addresses an envelope for mailing.
Autograph Envelope, unsigned, 5x4. Imprinted: "Supreme Court of the United States/Washington, D.C." 3-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., Nov 27 1938. Addressed by Brandeis to: "Mr. Roger Sherman S [illegible]/1265 Fair view Cir/South Milwaukee/Wis". At upper left, Brandeis has written: "Personal". Addressed the year before Brandeis retired from the U.S. Supreme Court. Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941), who had been nicknamed the "people's lawyer", supported Woodrow Wilson's nomination for the Presidency in 1912. In 1916, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Wilson, becoming the first Jewish Associate Justice. He worked behind the scenes to influence President Wilson to support the Zionist cause, and later brought Zionist matters to the attention of FDR. Brandeis, who served for 23 years on the Court until his retirement in 1939, was a progressive who was known for his anti-monopolist and anti-big business views. Lightly soiled and stained. Torn at upper edge from opening.
