LOUIS D. BRANDEIS
He cannot accept an honorary membership because he is on the Supreme
Court.
ALS: "Louis D. Brandeis" as Associate Justice of the Supreme
Court, 1p, 5x7¾. Washington, D.C., 1939
January 31. To Mr. Irving Reingold. Marked "Personal" by
Brandeis. In full: "Re yours of 30th Please explain to your associates
that a rule adopted shortly after I became a member of the Court precludes me
accepting the honorary membership courteously tendered." In 1912,
Brandeis, nicknamed the "people's lawyer", supported Woodrow Wilson's nomination
for the Presidency and in 1916, was appointed the first Jew on the Supreme
Court. He worked behind the scenes to influence President Wilson to support
the Zionist cause. Brandeis did intervene from time to time in political
matters. For example, he appealed to President Roosevelt to oppose the British
partition scheme of 1937, calling instead for the whole area of Palestine to
become a Jewish National Home. Retiring later in 1939, Brandeis died in 1941.
