LOUIS D. BRANDEIS. ALS: "Louis D. Brandeis" as Associate
Justice of the Supreme Court, 1p, 5x8. Washington, D.C., 1933 October
12. To Sanford Butts. In full: "Re yours of 9th. My thanks
for your letter with the Enclosures returned herewith. My only knowledge of

Secretary I am entirely content knowing that the matter has received your
attention". Handwritten postscript: "Your annual report for 1932
makes me eager to hear of the progress since". On June 1, 1916, President
Woodrow Wilson appointed LOUIS DEMBITZ BRANDEIS as the first Jew on the U.S.
Supreme Court. Brandeisserved until he retired in 1939 at the age of
83. It is said that one of the factors leading to the support of Brandeis'
confirmation to the Court by powerful Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge
was the probability that the popular lawyer, known as the "people's attorney",
would run against Lodge for his Senate seat in the November 7, 1916
election. This was the first Massachusetts U.S. Senate election held under the
17th Amendment whereby the people, not the state legislature, elected U.S.
Senators. SANFORD BUTTS worked in the Department of Justice, Division
of Mail and Files. Receipt stamp at upper center, 3 file holes at left
margin touch 1 letter. Lightly creased at left edge, else fine
