Justice, 1p, 5x7¾. Washington, D.C., 1938 November 27. On sheet
imprinted: "Supreme Court of the United States/Washington, D.C." to "Dear
Roger Sherman Hoar". In full: "My thanks for yours of 25th.
Cordially". ROGER SHERMAN HOAR (1887-1963), the great-great
grandson of American "Founding Father" of Roger Sherman and the grandson
of U.S. Attorney General Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, was a former State
Senator and Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts. The
author of a number of books on constitutional and patent law, Hoar also
wrote fiction works under the pen name of Ralph Milne Farley. LOUIS DEMBITZ
BRANDEIS (1856-1941), who had been nicknamed the "people's lawyer",
supported Woodrow Wilson's nomination for the Presidency in 1912. In
1916, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Wilson, becoming the first
Jewish Associate Justice. He worked behind the scenes to influence President
Wilson to support the Zionist cause, and later brought Zionist matters to the
attention of FDR. Brandeis, who served for 23 years on the Court until
his retirement in 1939, was a progressive who was known for his anti-monopolist
and anti-big business views. Lightly creased. Mid-horizontal fold underlines
