LOUIS BRANDEIS. ALS: "Louis D Brandeis" as Associate Justice, 1p, 5x7¾. Washington, D.C., 1938 November 27. On sheet imprinted: "Supreme Court of the United States/Washington, D.C." to "Dear Roger Sherman Hoar". In full: "My thanks for yours of 25th. Cordially". ROGER SHERMAN HOAR (1887-1963), the great-great grandson of American "Founding Father" of Roger Sherman and the grandson of U.S. Attorney General Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, was a former State Senator and Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts. The author of a number of books on constitutional and patent law, Hoar also wrote fiction works under the pen name of Ralph Milne Farley. LOUIS DEMBITZ BRANDEIS (1856-1941), who had been nicknamed the "people's lawyer", supported Woodrow Wilson's nomination for the Presidency in 1912. In 1916, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Wilson, becoming the first Jewish Associate Justice. He worked behind the scenes to influence President Wilson to support the Zionist cause, and later brought Zionist matters to the attention of FDR. Brandeis, who served for 23 years on the Court until his retirement in 1939, was a progressive who was known for his anti-monopolist and anti-big business views. Lightly creased. Mid-horizontal fold underlines signature. Fine condition.
