LOUIS D. BRANDEIS

Responding to birthday wishes, he hopes "to see- and hear - your voice in our court."

Autograph Letter signed: "Louis D. Brandeis" as Associate Justice, 1 page, 4½x6¾. No place, 1931 April 12. On Supreme Court stationery to "My dear Mr. Wallerstein [?], in full: "Let me thank you for the generous birthday wishes. I hope we shall see - and hear - your voice in our court. Cordially". Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941) established a law practice in Boston in 1879. He was called the "people's lawyer" for his pro bono advocacy of public interests, including municipal railway monopolization, life insurance practices, public land conservation and maximum day labor jobs for women and children. He joined with the Progressive movement in its attack on corporate bigness and the exploitation of the working class and consumer. On January 28, 1916, President Wilson nominated Brandeis to the Supreme Court of the United States. After four months, the longest in the history of a Supreme Court nominee, the Senate confirmed his appointment. The first Jewish Supreme Court Justice, he was an eloquent defender of freedom of speech and the right to privacy. He retired from the Court in 1939. Mailing fold through center. Lightly toned. Corners and top edge lightly worn. Pencil notes on verso (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
