Signature: "Hugo L. Black", 4½x2. Slightly soiled. Fine condition. Signatures of three U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justices who defined the U.S. Constitution. Appointed by President Roosevelt in 1939, FELIX FRANKFURTER (1882-1965) served as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court until his retirement in 1962. Frankfurter, a leading exponent of the doctrine of judicial self-restraint, was also a founder of the American Civil Liberties Union (1920). Appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Woodrow Wilson in 1916, LOUIS D. BRANDEIS (1856-1941) was the first Jewish Associate Justice. Known for his progressive views, the former "People's Attorney" served on the Court for 23 years, retiring in 1939. Appointed Associate Justice by FDR in 1937, HUGO L. BLACK (1886-1971) served until he retired a week before his death in 1971. A former Alabama U.S. Senator (1927-1937), Black became the First Amendment's foremost defender. Three items.
