LOUIS D. BRANDEIS
Re: the sale of a trust's assets.
TLS: "Louis D. Brandeis", 1p, 8x10. Boston, Mass., 1902 February 5. "Re Wells-Bryant" on Brandeis, Dunbar & Nutter stationery. To Charles H. Tyler, Esq., Boston. In full: "Mr. Wells would be glad to know what progress has been made in selling the assets of the trust during the month of January. Have you gotten a letter from John Bryant?" Louis D. Brandeis (1856-1941) established a law practice in Boston in 1879. He became known as the "people's lawyer" due to his pro bono advocacy of public interests, including municipal railway monopolization, life insurance practices, public land conservation and maximum day labor jobs for women and children. He joined with the Progressive movement in its attack on corporate bigness and the exploitation of the working class and consumer. On January 28, 1916, President Wilson nominated Brandeis to the Supreme Court of the United States. After four months, the longest in the history of a Supreme Court nominee, the Senate confirmed his appointment. He was the first Jew on the court. Brandeis retired in 1939. Folds, vertical fold runs between the "D" and "B". 2 file holes at upper margin. Pencil note (unknown hand) at blank area. Lightly creased.
