LOUIS D. BRANDEIS. TNS: "Louis D Brandeis", ¼p, 8x10¼. Boston, Massachusetts, 1902 October 17. On letterhead of the law firm of Brandeis, Dunbar & Nutter to Birney C. Parsons, Esq., Sears Building, Boston, Mass. In full: "Will you kindly let me have a reply to my letter of the 11th inst? Yours very truly". Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941), who had graduated from Harvard Law School as class valedictorian in 1877, and a fellow Harvard law student, Samuel D. Warren, had founded the law firm of Brandeis-Warren in 1879. After Warren's departure, Brandeis took on other partners, remaining as the firm's senior partner until his departure for Washington in 1916. In 1912, Brandeis, who had been nicknamed the "people's lawyer", supported Woodrow Wilson's nomination for the Presidency. In 1916, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Wilson, becoming the first Jewish Associate Justice. He worked behind the scenes to influence President Wilson to support the Zionist cause, and later brought Zionist matters to the attention of FDR. Brandeis, who served for 23 years on the Court until his retirement in 1939, was a progressive who was known for his anti-monopolist and anti-big business views. Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold touches the upper loops of the "L" in Louis and the "B" and "d" of Brandeis. Lightly shaded at blank right edge. 2 file holes at upper margin. Overall, fine condition.
