Signature: "L.Q.C. Lamar/Miss" as U.S. Representative from Mississippi and, on verso, "O.H. Platt/Connecticut" as U.S. Senator from Connecticut, 6x3½ album leaf. Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar (1825-1893), who served as a U.S. Representative from Mississippi from 1857-1860 and from 1873-1877, drafted the Mississippi ordinance of secession in 1861. During the Civil War, Lamar served in the Confederate Army as Lieutenant Colonel until 1862, when he entered the diplomatic service of the Confederacy and was sent on a special mission to Russia, France and England. Later a U.S. Senator (1877-1885) and Secretary of the Interior (1885-1888), Lamar was nominated by President Cleveland to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Confirmed by the Senate after a close vote, he was the first Southerner and Democrat to join the Court since the Civil War. Lamar served until his death in 1893. Orville H. Platt (1827-1905) was a Republican United States Senator from Connecticut from 1879 until his death in office in 1905. Platt, an attorney, had previously served as Secretary of State of Connecticut (1857-1859), and he was a member of the Connecticut State Senate (1861-1862) and the Connecticut House of Representatives (1864, 1869; Speaker in 1869). Lightly creased. Slightly soiled, minor shading at edges. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper and lower right margins of Lamar's side. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book.
