LUCIUS Q.C. LAMAR. Signature: "L.Q.C. Lamar/Miss.", 7¼x5¼. Former U.S. Congressman Lamar drafted the Mississippi ordinance of secession in 1861. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army as Lieutenant Colonel until 1862, when he entered the diplomatic service of the Confederacy and was sent on a special mission to Russia, France and England. Later a U.S. Senator (1877-1885) and Secretary of the Interior (1885-1888), he was nominated by President Cleveland for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Confirmed by the Senate after a close vote, he was the first Southerner and Democrat to join the Court since the Civil War. He served until his death in 1893. Pinhead-size stains at blank left.
