Appointed by James Buchanan on January 21, 1858, Nathan Clifford
(1803-1881) served as Associate Justice until his death on July 25, 1881.
Previously he had represented Maine in the U.S. Congress (1839-1843)
and served as Attorney General under President Polk (1846-1848). He
presided over the electoral commission which awarded the disputed
Presidential election of 1876 to Republican Rutherford B. Hayes over
Democrat Samuel Tilden. Lightly soiled. The "ff" and "d" smudged in
Clifford.
