Dated signature of the conservative Supreme Court Justice
Signature: "Pierce Butler/June 13 1929", as Associate Justice 5¼x2. Appointed Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President Warren G. Harding on December 21, 1922, Pierce Butler (1866-1939) served from 1923 until his death on November 16, 1939. Butler was one of the conservative "Four Horsemen" during the New Deal. Together with Justices McReynolds, Sutherland and Van Devanter, he opposed every piece of FDR's New Deal legislation that came before him. Ironically, Butler, the first Associate Justice from Minnesota, was a Democrat. Top left corner lightly creased. Ink lightly smeared. Fine condition.
