Rufus W. Peckham (1838-1909) served as Associate Justice until his death in
1909. Peckham voted with the majority in the Plessy v.
Ferguson decision (1896), the "separate but equal" standard sanctioning
segregation. He wrote the opinion of the 5-4 majority in Lockner v. New
York (1905), which declared a New York state law limiting the work-week to
60 hours to be an unconstitutional infringement on freedom of contracts.
Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine
condition.
