SAMUEL F. MILLER
Miller signed this leaf as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1887.
Signature: "Sam. F. Miller/Justice Sup. Court/United States/March 4, 1887". 7¼x4¾. Miller (1816-1890, born in Richmond, Kentucky) was appointed Associate Justice in 1862 by President Lincoln. He was one of the 15 members of the Electoral Commission appointed to decide the Hayes-Tilden election of 1876. The 20 contested electoral votes went to the Republican candidate by a vote of 8-7, strictly along party lines. The result: Hayes 185, Tilden 184. On March 4, 1877, Hayes was inaugurated 19th U.S. President. Miller served on the Supreme Court until his death in 1890. Lightly toned, especially on right corner, and creased. Signature is lightly smeared in places but legible. Leaf has been neatly torn from album on left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
