Signature: "Autograph of/Sam. F. Miller/Asso. Jus. Sup. Court/US". With pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 4½x2½ card. Miller (1816-1890, born in Richmond, Kentucky) was appointed Associate Justice in 1862 by President Lincoln. He was one of the 15 members of the Electoral Commission appointed to decide the Hayes-Tilden election of 1876. The 20 contested electoral votes went to the Republican candidate by a vote of 8-7, strictly along party lines. The result: Hayes 185, Tilden 184. On March 4, 1877, Hayes was inaugurated 19th U.S. President. Miller served on the Supreme Court until his death in 1890. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
