Supreme Court Justice Samuel Nelson wrote this letter to a lawyer in Utica, New York in 1824, while he was still a Circuit Judge. It accompanied $25, which sent on behalf of a third party.
Autograph letter signed "S. Nelson". 1 page, 7¾x12¾, 1 sheet folded, docketed on verso. Madison, New York, April 19, 1824. Addressed to Thomas H. Hubbard, Esq., Counselor at Law, Utica, New York on verso. In full: "Dear Sir: I enclose you the money I [illegible] of Mr. Roberts on your note [not enclosed] - It was very much delayed on account of your [illegible] in your letter to me until the spring to $25 the least to [illegible] on the note. Mr. Roberts refused paying that sum, and promised me he would see you until [illegible] out of Penn [illegible]. He claimed [illegible], &refused paying over $7 per [illegible]. To end any more trouble he finally agreed he would pay $22, which I enclosed to [illegible]. Yours sincerely". Nelson (1792-1873), who had made a name for himself as an attorney, was a Circuit Judge (1823-1831) and Associate (1831-1837) and Chief Justice (1837-1845) of the Supreme Court of New York before being appointed as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President John Tyler in 1845. Serving until resigning due to illness in 1872, Nelson was involved in the historic Dred Scott case, and he was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to serve on the joint high commission that arbitrated the Alabama claims in 1871. Lightly toned, stained, foxed, soiled and creased. Random ink stains. Wax seal remnant and paper loss on verso (no show-through). Folded twice vertically and four times horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
