Supreme Court Justice Samuel Nelson wrote this letter in 1860 to
arrange a visit by the recipient.
Autograph letter signed "S. Nelson". 4 pages, 4x6½, one sheet
folded, front and verso. Cooperstown, New York, June 6, 1860. Addressed
to "E. W. Stoughton". In full: "I have [illegible] of
postponing the court till July, some time after the 4th, as soon as maybe - the
reason is that the [illegible]shall will [sic] be [illegible]
here on the 20th and continues for two weeks - The accommodation will not be
as good as after the [illegible] court adjourns, and the courtroom will
not be at our service - It is a matter of no moment to me, but I think it would
be more pleas-ant for all to postpone the meeting till after the court - If
postponed, remember, it is not be interfere with the [illegible]
& [illegible] to make our hour - [illegible] home while
here - we shall be prepared and expect you - my son Willie and his wife wired to
the farm yesterday, and this morning Annie left for Troy to make her
[illegible] there [illegible] for Mrs. S. and I myself came here -
Mrs. N. & my-self are alone - The farm is looking beautiful - We shall be
glad of the opportunity of the [illegible] to your-self & Mrs. S.
Mrs. N sends her best regards to Mrs, S as does also Your friend".
Nelson (1792-1873), who had made a name for himself as an attorney,
was a circuit judge (1823-1831) and Associate (1831-1837) and
Chief Justice (1837-1845) of the Supreme Court of New York before
being appointed as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by
President Tyler in 1845. Serving until resigning due to illness in 1872, Nelson
was involved in the historic Dred Scott case, and he was appointed by President
Grant to serve on the joint high commission that arbitrated the
Alabama claims in 1871. Lightly toned and creased. Handwriting
and signature have smeared and bled lightly but are legible. Show-through
touches handwriting but not signature. Ink transfer, not near signature. Fold
creases through "S" of signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
