SAMUEL NELSON
Samuel Nelson, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, wrote and signed this letter to confirm an appointment.
Autograph letter signed "S. Nelson". 1 page, 4¾x8, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Fifth Avenue Hotel, dated "Nov. 30". In full: "My dear Mrs S. I am quite at leisure today : and shall join you and friends with great pleasure at 2½ of p.m at your [illegible]Truly,". Nelson (1792-1873), who had made a name for himself as an attorney, was a Circuit Judge (1823-1831) and Associate (1831-1837) and Chief Justice (1837-1845) of the Supreme Court of New York before being appointed as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President John Tyler in 1845. Serving until resigning due to illness in 1872, Nelson was involved in the historic Dred Scott case, and he was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to serve on the joint high commission that arbitrated the Alabama claims in 1871. Lightly toned and creased. Signature has bled lightly in places but is legible. Body of letter has smeared lightly in places but is legible. Light discolorations, which touch body of letter but not signature. Light nick at top edge of letter and at top and bottom edges of spine. Folded in half vertically and once horizontally. Otherwise in fine condition.
